KNAC Pure Rock
Heftel Broadcasting will end its “Highway Rock” format on KNAC (96.9) from the Barstow Station at midnight Oct. 31, when it will revive the “Pure Rock” format originally heard on the original KNAC from 1986 to 1995, when the station broadcast on 105.5 in Los Angeles.
The re-launched format will also be carried on KHDR (94.9) Baker, CA and KHYZ-HD3 (99.7) Mountain Pass, CA, and begin at midnight on Halloween with “archival clips, insane highlights, and the legendary voices that made KNAC infamous in the first place,” according to the station’s President of Rock “Gonzo Greg” Spillane, who began his career at KNAC during the first incarnation of “Pure Rock.”
Gonzo adds, “KNAC wasn’t just a station: it was a lifestyle, a brotherhood, and a middle finger to boring radio. We’re bringing it back to give the old and new rock fans their soundtrack back, and we’re not asking for permission.”
Core artists on KNAC version 2.0 include Five Finger Death Punch, Bad Omens and The Pretty Reckless, along with bands whose careers the station helped launch during its initial run, such as Metallica, Bon Jovi and Poison.
In addition to Spillane, other voices on the new KNAC include Rich Van Slyck and Mel Rox, along with original KNAC air personalities such as Thrasher and Jack Trash. On weekends, the station will air the syndicated “Charlie Kendall’s Metalshop,” “LA Lloyd Rock 30 Countdown” and Jackie Kajzer’s “Full Metal Jackie.”
